Men in the US will be able to get erectile dysfunction medication at a much lower cost after an agreement with Pfizer, a company said Wednesday, in a move that is likely to be seen as a move to cut down on the cost of erectile dysfunction drugs.
Pfizer said it would seek approval to begin selling the drug in the US after a review by an independent panel of health regulators concluded that it does not meet the US’s approved standards. It will also sell the drug in other European countries, the US.
Pfizer, which has been in the business of selling pharmaceuticals to consumers, had earlier said it would take a few months to approve the sale of Viagra, another drug for the treatment of ED, after its US patent expired in November.
Pfizer said it planned to begin selling the drug in the US next year. Its spokesman said it would begin selling the drug in other European markets and Canada later in 2017. Sales of Viagra in the US started in 1998 and is likely to grow as the number of men in the US continues to rise.
The drug is an FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, are approved as medicines for treating angina, and both are approved for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
